My former colleague

A couple of years back I worked at another company, but got a better job offer and left to where I'm today. A colleague at my old workplace was a very driven person, trying to succeed in her career. Fast forward to February 2025 her employers went under and so she was out of work, with chaos in the local industry jobs were scarce. She struggled to find suitable work and couldn't afford her rent. Ending up in a woman's shelter, working whatever she could get. She had put all her earnings into looking good and projecting a successful career persona. At 32 she was passed over for jobs in her chosen career and thought she would end up in the gutter. I happened to meet her as she was looking for work, I 34 realized straight her life was falling apart, gone was the confident woman I'd know I use to know. As we'd always gotten on fairly well, I thought I might be able to help her. Mainly thru spot work at the company I worked for, not a reliable source of income, but it would give her a foot in the door if something came available. Then I got promoted to a newly created position, it entitled me to an assistant and travel was the main part of my new job. I thought of my former colleague for my assistant, but she would need a home base not a shelter. So, I offered her a spare room in my house, she accepted and then I realized my employers had a high morals code in their company. At first, I thought we could skirt it as I lived on a corner by using the side street as her address. But if found out we would both be unemployed, I remarked jokingly we should just marry and nothing we'll then have nothing to worry about. Her response was OKAY I'll marry you, I didn't know if she was joking along or serious. So, okay we'll marry tomorrow then another OKAY. Still unsure, but let it go at the time, next morning Saturday she was dressed up looking great. She was serious about marrying me, so we did, I informed my boss I would be using my wife as my assistant. He said he didn't know I was married, I said we married Saturday. Kept that secret he said, I said I don't mention my personal life much at all. With my now wife work fulltime her self-esteem returned and she is putting in as much effort into our marriage as she did in her career before losing her job. Also, the sex is great, and she wants to start a family also. Perfect outcome I think.
