Was Desperate Now Happy

My parents died in the pandemic; they had health concerns before, and the virus finished them. My husband died in a single vehicle accident in 2021; after working long shifts the police think he fell asleep at the wheel. Left with a 3-year-old daughter and trying to balance work and caring for her, I 27 downsized to just a rented room. Then the woman who minded my daughter while I worked had a heart attack. She survived but couldn't care for my daughter anymore, now I'd nobody to watch my daughter on the last day of my working week. I took her to work with me, hoping to find a suitable affordable place for her care. At work a firm junior partner started to question me about my intentions concerning my daughter. But a senior partner 45 came along and told him I am working with him that day and to butt out. That was first I knew I was supposed to be working with him, but he'd me join him in his office. He said he would have me as his assistant and that the junior partner had no empathy and lacked compassion. My daughter played on the floor of his office, and he took us both out to lunch. He asked me about my struggles, then he suggested me and my daughter move into his penthouse apartment with him and his housekeeper. The housekeeper couldn't watch my daughter while I was working, she had health concerns. But I could still bring her to work with me as my boss said it was okay. After a month of living with him he asked me would I be agreeable to have a child for him, adding no pressure I could refuse if I wanted. I asked how he wanted to proceed, as I couldn't see a better way forward for myself and daughter, at least I knew he would look after us. He said I could choose a contract arrangement or marriage, and he would adopt my daughter as well. It shocked me how casual he was about it all, I asked you would marry me just to have a child. Why not he said it the easiest way and everybody wins. I married him and he adopted my daughter, still his assistant and soon pregnant. I was at work my daughter was now in day care, my now husband was involved in a conference. I came across the junior partner grilling a friend of mine about her work, he said she brought down the whole office because she looked out of place, she overweight, 49 and divorced and lives in a room at the same place I used to live at. My status at the office was quite high now as I was the assistant to the senior partner and also his wife. I told the junior partner to leave her alone as she was part of my husband's team. He was backed off glaring at me, but not game enough to say anything. I took my friend to my husband's office, told my husband what I'd done after he returned. He told my friend she was now his personal secretary, and she should move in us. The conference was between all the senior partners and my husband's status had increased, his duties now included all the high valued clients as they liked his work, and he didn't mince words with them. Told them what sometimes they didn't want to hear, and they liked that as it was refreshing instead of everybody just agreeing them. My husband's office staff increased to 7 with a junior partner and 3 junior lawyers and an assistant for me as my workload increased also. The junior partner wasn't the annoying one, my friend sat outside his office door at her desk, nobody got in without her agreeing. Even the biggest clients, her self-esteem increased, and she is a very good private secretary. With four children counting my daughter who loves her two brothers (twins) and her sister the latest addition. We employ a nanny to watch over our children and have moved into a large house, and we have five house staff. Sadly, the former housekeeper passed away last year her health finally failing completely. My husband is truly my soulmate I believe and treats everybody with respect, until they prove they don't deserve it.
